SWYP concept printer combines good looks with touchscreen editing

A concept printer from Seattle-based designers Artefact wants to bring those touchscreen editing skills learnt from smartphones and tablets to the not-so-electrifying world of printers. The streamlined SWYP (See What You Print) has a pretty striking design -- for a printer. The paper tray even folds away flush on top of the touchscreen in a very (very!) familar way. That contraption shown above would be able to connect directly to your camera or phone, foregoing the PC step with editing and collating all done on-screen; there's even an augmented reality interface that visualizes ink levels and those inevitable printer woes. At present, these guys aren't gunning to take out the only thing HP hasn't flubbed lately, but hopefully the glossy concept vid after the break will tide you over till commercialization (prayerfully) hits.

[Thanks, Gene]

Growing Up Geek: Tom Merritt

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have a special guest: journalist and broadcaster Tom Merritt, current host of Tech News Today on TWiT.tv.

I always hesitate to apply the term geek to myself. To me it's an honorific. Someone with super mad skills or knowledge deserves the term, and the superior of all those who deserve it is the alpha geek. But times being what they are geek has become a term of currency. Before I let this devolve into a debate about the difference between geek and nerd, let's move on to the evidence. You, dear reader can decide for yourself where on the geek scale I belong.

Xobni Rebrands Its Product Smartr, Launches Contact Manager For Android And Gmail

smartr-androidXobni always was a clever name (it's Inbox backwards), but perhaps it was too clever. Today, the startup that tries to make your email smarter is rebranding its newer products Smartr and launching them out of private beta for Android and Gmail. These products have been in private beta for several months. The Android app takes over your address book on your phone. It ranks contacts by importance and how often you communicate with them instead of alphabetically. Since it is all managed in the cloud, it can handle thousands of contacts. Different tabs show you contact details, that contact's recent social feeds, your relationship history, and other contacts you share in common.

Jennifer Aniston & Demi Moore Premiere "Five" in NYC

Reconvening after visiting "Good Morning America" earlier in the day, the stars responsible for the Lifetime movie "Five" gathered together for a New York City screening on Monday night (September 26).

Held at Skylight SOHO, Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore smiled while posing arm-in-arm while fellow contributor Alicia Keys brought her musician husband Swizz Beatz along for the blue carpet affair.

Set to debut on October 10th, "Five" is an anthology of five separate-yet-interconnected tales of lives affected by cancer - with Aniston, Moore and Keys among the five celebrity directors.

Of the project, Jennifer previously told Glamour magazine, "We were intrigued by the challenge of creating short stories that would defy audiences' expectation of the subject."

She added, "We wanted to balance the drama with humor and irreverence because that's what's helped our friends who've faced this get through their treatment."
