For a very long time obesity in children has been covered by the press. But it does seem that it has had little effect, especially in the US where it has reached epidemic proportions.
We all generally know what the causes are, but we are not here to discuss that or assign blame. In a child's later years this obesity or even just being overweight can have major health risks that can even be life-threatening. Physical and psychological areas are suffering in a noticeable percentage of this entire generation. It is hard enough to be a teen without having to endure being bullied about weight by others as well. We shall have a deeper look at what may be facing an obese child today.
It seems that just about all physical areas of the human body are severely stressed by obesity. If a child is obese then this can have severe dangers to their respiratory system, giving them obstructive sleep apnea. There are also problems that interfere with their normal breathing.
From being overweight a child or young adult can develop asthma. Another term often used is exercise intolerance, and it arises from the various challenges facing the normal breathing process. People that are overweight seem to always have labored breathing and you may have noticed this. It is a natural response to the physical body basically working harder all the time. Your cardiovascular system is just going to get more stress on it because of this.
Mostly the risks will develop in your cardiovascular system. Severely obese children are known to have elevated serum cholesterol as well as general fatty blood profiles involving triglycerides. This is something that needs immediate intervention early in life as that is when they start to develop. Imagine your child having to take prescription medication to counter their high cholesterol. There are known side effects that adults accept when they have to take these medications.
These medicines may be complicated for a young child or a teenager to take.
Teenagers have a faster rate of personality development and socialization than kids of other ages. In addition to those processes, a teenager's body image is at a particularly dicey stage. An obese teen is going to have a hard time developing normally as far as these things are concerned. This means that when the teen leaves high school he or she will be at severe developmental disadvantages. It will be harder for most of them to compete and succeed by normally accepted standards. Obese kids and young adults have often been (accurately) described as "the walking wounded." This is because the damage that has been done by obesity affects the body and the mind.
